INSTITUTE OF WATER PROBLEMS |
The Institute of Water Problems is an autonomous research entity affiliated to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences founded in 1963. It carries out theoretical and applied investigations and develops methods, models, software, technologies and installations concerning the water resources use and protection. It assists the country water resource systems construction and management practice with the results of its research work and gained expertise. One of the main objectives of the Institute is also to help the country government and river basin authorities in national waters management. The main fields and priorities of the research investigations are: · water resource systems planning and management, assessment of the river basin water resources and demands balances, etc.; · water resources quality management; · hydraulic problems of water systems and groundwater; · stability of hydraulic structures |

Acad. Dimo Velev, member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS).
Prof. Dimo Velev was the founder of the Institute of Water Problems in 1963. Born in 1903 he graduated in hydraulic engineering in Vienna in 1929. Through his nearly 50 years long activity as constructor and designer of the greatest hydraulic structures in Bulgaria before and immediately after the World War II, professor at the Institute of Civil Engineering in Sofia, member of BAS and director of IWP Dimo Velev has an enormous contribution to the rise and development of the hydraulic science as well as to the water economy and construction in Bulgaria. As director during nearly 24 years of IWP and its preceding units he played an exceptional role in the development of the institute and for its recognition by the Bulgarian hydraulic science and practice. Since its foundation the research activity of IWP has always been directed to the most complex problems of water construction and water resources management in Bulgaria. The academic traditions and practical approach in the research work to the regarded tasks, established by Prof. Dimo Velev in the Institute of Water Problems, has always been alive and are still being followed by its staff. |

The main research activity of the Institute consists in development and application into practice of many methodologies, methods, software, technologies, etc., in the field of optimal water resource systems planning and management, water resources conservation, natural and waste water treatment, hydrometry, river flow and seepage problems of surface and groundwater and stability and integrity of hydraulic structures. The employed research methods include both theoretical as well as laboratory experimental investigations. The theoretical and applied achievements of the Institute are described in annual reports and preserved in the institute archive. Some of them are also published in the institute journal issued annually. |
Equipment In the institute are currently functioning four laboratories for carrying out investigations in: water meter calibration, hydrometry and hydraulics, ground water seepage, waves simulation and sediment transport, water quality chemical analyses. Well developed computer net and accessories. Scientific staff - 42 persons: 4 professors, 19 assoc. professors, 3 DSc and 22 PhD. |
